You can get your 2 year old to sit down and learn numbers and colors...i have a 2 and a half year old and he can count to 12.
But i sat down and made it fun for him to learn and i never forced him he chose to do it with me.
I took a piece or printing cardboard and traced a real playing card on it 6 time in two rows...(so there are 2 rows of 3)
and i marked one to six on them and colored each number a different color,
then i got a second piece of printing cardboard and done the same thing...but when i made them i cut them out so they looked like palying,,, he could lay the cut out ones on the cardboard (but make sure the ones you cut out match the same color and number.ex: both # 1's are red, both # 2's are blue ect....)
my son loves bikes and trucks , so , i told him that they were bikes and he had to put the red bike on the red ramp, and when he does i tell him the color and number and i get him to repeat after me...even though he didn't know the colors and numbers the first 5 or 6 try's, but he caught on . I tryed him once or twice a day and each time i asked him what he wanted the card to be ...(bikes or trucks)and what ever he said thats what they were. He has fun doing it too.
I done it off the top of my head because i to thought how could i get him to calm down and learn.... but it made me realize that ..hey a 2 year old is a 2 year old and they are learning more and more each day..and the more time you spend wit your 2 year old the better ..all you need is patience and time...

A 2 year old has the capacity to learn those things but it is pretty much consistency. What you will want to do is do simple things everyday like putting toys away and counting. Or showing him the colors of certain parts on a toy. That is how they learn. It is hard for a 2 year old to sit down and learn something because they do not have a wide enough attention span. And that is not their fault. It is just the way their brain is. Especially if they get bored with something.

How about just letting them be 2 and be hyper for a little longer? There is plenty of time for them to learn such things in the next couple of years.
If you really want to teach them this stuff now look for some simple childrens books that deal with colors & numbers. At bedtime when they should be wound down read them a book. At first just read to them but slowly encourage them to interact with you while you read.
Books like Clifford Learns Colors, 10 Ladybugs are good books.

Your 2 year old is learning, just by playing. If you expect a 2 yr old to learn his colors and numbers, I think you are expecting too much. The little thing has to get down the basics 1st like how to hold a cup, so nothing is spilled, how to go potty on the big pot and just the basics. Save the numbers and colors till later, then it will come naturally.
Good luck.

A 2yr. old is not meant to sit down and learn concepts. Colors, numbers, shapes, etc. are all things that should be learned while playing. This means it is up to you, as the parent, to find learning opportunities in everyday situations. When you're getting your child dressed--talk to him/her. Say, "Let's pick out a red shirt." Or as you are dressing him say, "What color is this shirt?" When you are feeding him say "Look you have two apple slices on your plate, do you want another one?" You can add, "You had two apple slices and I gave you one more, now you have three!!!" Maybe say, "Now show me three with your fingers." And then count with him/her. Little kids love to count. My 3 yr. old knows his shapes, colors, numbers and is even starting to sound out words. It has all come naturally just from us interacting with him and turning every situation into a learning situation. After awhile you don't even realize you are doing it and suddenly you have this child who knows all these concepts and you're not even really sure how!!

I know this will sound crazy, but try teaching numbers while jumping up and down. That is how my son learned to count. We counted steps and jumps. Colored balls are good for colors. Try playing something like fetch with different color balls and getting him to run to the red ball. My son is incredibly hyper too and he can count to 60 pretty much without any help now. We count everything and we say the color of everything. I don't know if you'll be able to get him to sit down.

Sitting down might not work for long, but you can introduce colors and numbers during play. Go for a walk and talk about the different colored cars or houses. My son use to love to count all the animals he saw on a walk. Have your little one help you separate things like cars or blocks into piles by what colors they are and then count them. Another thing is books Brown Bear was a favorite at my house.

Your 2 year old is not ready to learn this way. Sesame street does a great ob of entertaining and teaching. Try getting your child into playing games that give the opportunity to learn.
The childs ability to learn grows, even in knidergarten they are not expected to sit and learn, they are up and learning hands on.
Good Luck

Two year old don't sit down. Kids learn colors, numbers, etc. better in everyday settings, not sitting at the table. When you're out and about; anywhere; the grocery store, the mall, point out everything. "Look at this RED shirt, mommy's buying the BROWN bread, let's put on this GREEN shirt." Same with numbers. Count everything when you're out and about. Your child will catch on quicker when you're applying it to every day situations.

Why should he have to sit down? All kids learn things in different ways. Instead of trying to make him sit down and learn try having him learn in other ways. Take a small dowel rod and attach a string and a paperclip instant fishing pole, then cut out paper shaped fish and place numbers and letters on them, place a magnet on them and let him fish. Or you can turn learning numbers and letters into a song and dance. Instead of making yourself insane work with what you have. Both you and your child will have more fun and who knows you both may learn something.
