I have a Chihuaha that is 4 months old and well on his way to being housebroken. I am very happy with his progress with crate training. My only question is every time it rains, he refuses to go out. I even close the door behind him and he stays just out of reach of the rain. I can have him out there for 20 minutes and he still will not set foot in the rain. I'm not sure how to make him go. I hope this doesn't go on when it starts getting really cold! Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

I too have a Chihuahua and had the same problem forever, then I found out that if i put him out the door and left it open or cracked and stood there and told him to "Hurrryyy" he would go do his thing and know I would be there with the door ready to let him back in...I guess it was something about being in the wet and possibly not getting back in...

Poor little guy. Just go out with him and carry an umbrella. Or maybe set up some sort of tent for him. (And if he's not going out now when it's rainy, I'm sure he won't go out when it's also cold and rainy. Some dogs just don't like the rain, especially small delicate dogs like Chihuahas)

My Irish Setter won't go out to spend a penny in the rain either - she just huddles on the doorstep with her tail between her legs.

However, if I get her lead/leash & clip it on, I can take her out & she's perfectly happy. Obviously she believes that I should get wet too. I've now got an umbrella on standby at the back door!

I have a Boxer that doesn't like to go out into the rain either. I take the umbrella and keep it over him to keep him dry. You could try getting him little boots and a raincoat. They do make them cause my mom had them for her poodle. Plus, maybe get him a sweater cause they don't do good in the cold.
Good luck.

I hate to tell you this, but this is a problem with all chihuahuas, at least in my experience. They hate the rain worse than the cold. But you will find they will probably not go out after it gets really, really cold. Some people take an umbrella and hold it over the chi so he will not get wet.....lol We have a tedency to spoil these little dogs.

my dach is 6 mths old, and he won't do it either. what i do is just take him out, and make him stand there with me. eventually he gets over it, but he won't go if it's pouring out (i don't want to go out either). my dach is perfectly house/crate/door trained, and it's the only time he doesn't go out. your puppy will have to get used to it, or he'll have to hold it. good luck.

My cousin had same problem.. you;ll have to go out with him in the rain with umbrella..the vet also advised my cousin...their dog was picky about getting they feet wet in the puddles..so they also lifted the dog out to pee and poo then when he was done lifted him back...all under the umbrella...they are just like kids ...good luck

Yes I have the solution because my beagle wont leave the house till we bought her a raincoat. It is flannel inside and it has a hood. It was handmade but you can buy one around your area. Now my beagle goes out and enjoys the yard in the rain.
