There is a reason why he is stealing. You have to find out why and get him to stop. Counseling, loss of privildges may be necessary. You need to explain the laws and rules that are expected as well what the consequences for people who steal and what is says about the person stealing. You need to get this under situtation quick. Its both of your reputations, honor and trust at stake.

mine stole too. had a talk with the school teacher. decided that all of a sudden some of her things would "go missing" to get her to see the other side of it. - one day she would walk into the class room and whoops !! her chair was missing, next day: her pencil box gone !! at home : hmmm cant find your favorite toy?? guess someone stole it when no one was home !! she didnt much like being on the recieving end of "lost" stuff and it took about a week before she got the idea that borrowing without asking is stealing. and that having your stuff stolen isnt a very nice feeling.

Another way to look at it is that the child is crying out for attention and not getting it, so he resorts to stealing in an effort to get any sort of attention, even it if means getting in trouble. Talk to the child, find out what is going on with him or her.

Make him take the thing he stole back. There is nothing more embarrassing in the world. Then also what could happen is the person or shop that he or she stole from might end up calling the cops. That will really teach him a lesson.

hmmm... that depends what it is he's stealing.

has it cost you money? if you make him work to pay it off then thats a pretty good way.

if he's shoplifting then dont let him go to the store.

if he's stealing other stuff, then just keep a constant eye on him.

Make them return the stolen item.
Ground them from trips to the store for about a month after that.

Make them take the stolen item back and confess that they stole it and have them pay for the item. If they do not have the money to pay for it make them work for it.

That's easy. "Spare the rod, spoil the child." Bet the kid won't steal again.
