Do not use Alpharooms to book a hotel unless you read their terms and conditions and are 100% sure of your dates etc.
It has just cost me £129 to cancel 7 days in advance even though the hotel only had a 48 hour cacellation rule. Alpharooms charged me 50% as a cancellation fee.... this is worse than unfair bank fees!!

If you use an agency they have to recover some of their losses. I used a reputable agency but I lost the lot when cancelling. If you can book hotels direct except those in other countries unless you are sure of their policy. I self book as I contact the hotel direct. The hotel will nearly always offer you a better rate than going through a hotel booking agency. I only book direct with the hotel abroad when I am sure that I know all there is to know about their T's & C's. If you don't read them as appears to be your case, then you can only blame yourself, harsh I know but T's & C's are there for a reason. If you don't read them it really is your fault. My general advice is read all T's & C's before you book any room holiday etc as you may find out you will be severly out of pocket.

If it is there in their terms and conditions then you have only yourself to blame for not having read them or not believing them if you did read them.

no one forced you to use them for booking.

I had to cancel a booking in September with Expedia because my mother had a heart attack. Expedia charged a small amount (not 50%). I had booked with them because they had a cheaper room rate than the hotel's web site which would not have charged anything for 24 hours notice. This was my choice.

that is very unfortunate & certainly sounds unreasonable, sorry you got screwed ...

If you don't mind me adding a thought in the interest of expanding your advice (not in any way meant to rub salt in the wound ...)

whenever you get a good deal from an internet site offering great hotel rates, ALWAYS check the original hotel site, it is often at least as good if not cheaper & without the horrendous restrictions mentioned here.

Try to just put it down to living & learning & thanks for sharing your experience so others may avoid the same trap ....
