is there something i can put on the tresh can to keep my dogs out of it while we are sleeping?

Put the trash can where he can't get to it - in the bathroom with the door shut, get a baby gate and block off the kitchen or buy a crate and crate train him.

I have a sure fired cure as I have used it. Take a Dixie cup of ammonia and simply place it standing up in your trash, if you dog knocks over the trash the aroma will make it stay away they hate the Oder try it it works. Good luck

Go to the infant supplies section Target, WalMart, KMart or safety area at a home improvement store. They have all kinds of latches to attach to whatever you want to keep a toddler out of.... should work for your dogs, too

We have the dogs raid our trash on occasion if there's something in there they especially want. When I know it's in there, I put our trash out in our breeze way and close the door to eliminate access for them.

You can put the trash can on a counter, in the garage/basement (if you have either), etc.
Or you can enclose the dogs in the bedroom with you during the night. That's what I always did.

My dogs kept on getting into my trash at home. So I made a solution of cayenne pepper and water and sprayed it on the outside. It irritates their noses, so they kept away.
