A dozen eggs, a splash of milk and a couple of NY strips, blend well and chug it down. It doesn't taste very good, but it is loaded with protein. Seriously, you can buy powdered protein from a health food store and mix it into most drinks you would like better. I would stick with milk and two eggs, a favorite yogurt and maybe a banana for balance. Adding some flax seed or wheat germ will give you some good fiber and won't change the flavor or consistancy enough to matter.

1. you want to consume a protein shake within an hour AFTER a workout.

2. Before a workout -- 1-2 hours -- you can consume a protein shake as well. There are some studies that say that consuming a protein/carb meal right before a workout works as well to promote hypertrophy (muscle growth) but this isn't definitive and most trainers I know and athletes don't eat right before a workout.

Workout protein shakes should be with a fast acting protein made of whey.

Other protein shakes you take to supplement your diet should be a blend of casein and whey. Micellar Casein and Whey is ideal.

You can make your own shakes at home, but you'll probably find the need to buy Whey Protein or Casein Protein anyway. It's hard to get 40-60g of protein in a shake without it. Think about it, for a shake you have milk, yogurt, honey, peanut butter, and maybe ice cream or heavy cream as the main protein sources. That won't cut it.

A good home protein shake will no doubt have some added protein powder. John Beradi, fitness model, author, phD and trainer recommends

8-12 oz milk
1/2 cup green tea
tsp honey
2 scoops whey or whey/casein protein powder (about 40g)
1/2 banana or 4-5 frozen strawberries

creatine can be taken anytime during the day but after a workout is 'best' initially. You DO NOT need to buy anything other than the cheapest pure creatine monohydrate you find. The reason? Your bbody eventually saturates with creatine in 4 weeks or so. You aren't training for an immediate pump, so save the money and put the creatine in milk or tea and have daily. It builds up over time.

Overall, increase your protein and healthy fat intake. 1-2g of protein per pound of bodyweight, take fish oils (10g daily min) and generally eat clean.

See if you can eat a clean diet of protein, fats, complex carbs and get 15x your bodyweight in cals. try to increase this over time by eating 5-6 times a day or more.

You can put on fat and water weight pretty quickly -- but do you want that? Probably not.

Any drink with calories will help you gain weight. Fat. Are you looking to also gain muscle? If so, working out to the point of muscle fatigue is necessary.

To gain weight, use any of the protein powders available that fit your budget. Mix with milk, not water.

To lose weight, look for 0 carb whey protein powder and mix with 0 cal beverage.

Eating/drinking protein only builds muscle if it's "needed". If someone only works out for 30 minutes a day, their muscles don't "need" protein. Therefore, those protein drinks are merely extra calories.

Here is what I use as my natural shake and it seems to work pretty well and taste good. I put 16 oz. of vannila yogurt, my creatine supplement, 1 banana, 1 apple, one orange, a cup of ice cubes and 6 boiled eggs. It doesn't sound like it would taste good but it does and you can add things like frozen strawberries etc to add some different tastes.
