They leaned both ways. Some were Loyalists. Some were Patriots. About half didn't care. When it came to independence, the Loyalists migrated to the city of Halifax in what is now Canada. As they said at that time, "Hell, Hull, or Halifax!" Hull is a city in the U.K.

Actually, they leaned neither way. There wasn't any thought of separating from England until after the Great War for Empire (aka the French and Indian War) ended in 1763. During the time period you asked about, England basically left the colonies alone and rarely made them pay taxes.
