I think I have what I will need but also feel that I may not have what I need. I'm a what if person and think about all the what ifs during the whelping. What do you have in your whelping kit?

all of the answers are great, nard to pick just one, but I have to. PS we have the vet programed into our phones phonebook, and they can't wait for the call that the pups are on the way.

Basic whelping essentials we use all the time are:

*Lots of blankets and towels (birthing is often messy)
*surgical gloves
*sterile scissors
*a bowel of warm soapy water (for your hands, not the puppies)
*a bowl of room-temperature broth for the momma dog to drink, if she wants it, in case she needs extra fluids (the whelping process can take 12+ hours sometimes)
*make sure the room / whelping area is warm (70-degrees at least). Newborn pups can't shiver, and can catch a chill very easily. If their core temperature drops, they can die within a matter of hours.
*a cell phone and the emergency number of your vet or local animal hospital (in case something goes wrong)

Good luck!
