From what I understand you take different breeds and breed down through the generations, 4 generations are required by the AKC, and then a petition is circled and if enough people sign it becomes a recognized breed. Some breeds are hundreds of years old, some as new as a few years old. What is wrong with trying to breed down cockapoos in the same way to get them to "breed true"? Why are people so set in their ways that trying to create a new breed is unaccaptable? How old is the general population answering questions on here anyway?

Maybe people would be kinder if instead of saying cockapoo they were called somthing completely different so as not to imply a mutt but a new breed to be created.

What's the purpose of any other breed? Cockapoos are COMPANION dogs, and they have a more loving disposition and are so much smarter than any other AKC registered dog I have ever met. Did I mention I don't like rude answers?

Yeah, well I was ticked off by the last question I asked so in my hasted didn't double check. Jesus, what is wrong with you? What are you a 40 year old hag who has nothing better to do than rip on other people?

To be recognized by the AKC, a new breed would have to have been bred for a specific purpose. An example of this would be a Labrador Retriever was bred to retrieve water fowl. A German Shepherd dog was bred to herd sheep. A Beagle was bred to track and hunt.
Cockapoos were bred by unscrupulous breeders out to make a fast buck. While it is true that a breed registry would have to show 4 generations etc. it doesn't tell the whole story of why breeds are accepted to the AKC in the first place.
Also, the breed recognition process requires the formation of a breed club. The breed standard must be spelled out and accepted by the breed club and the AKC. This process could take many years. Just ask the folks who have Red and White Setters what they've been through (they will be officially recognized by the AKC in 2007).

EXACTLY!!! Cockapoos come from pet quality stock, most of which was not AKC registered to begin with. People saw $$$ and decided to breed these first designer mutts. Breeding stock is RARELY screened for health problems, and records (stud books) were poorly kept.
Breeds, for the most part, were created for a purpose. Cockers have a purpose, Poodles have a purpose. What purpose do Cockapoos have???????????
No good and reputable breeders of either Cockers or Poodles are going to let their stock be used for a mutt breeding, so how does that make Cockapoo breeding anything more than a money making thing????????

We really do not need another "companion" breed. There is no purpose in creating a dog that has no purpose!!! Many of the breeds now HAD a purpose at one time. They may not now, but they did.

If the process you outline for AKC recognizing a "new" breed was that simple...Cockapoos would have been recognized LONG ago. There MUST be more to it don't you think???

Ditto what everyone else said!

I've been in the grooming industry for 15 years, 20 if you count the 5 years I worked as a bather. I have never seen cockapoos that have the same features. Even poorly breed Poodles and Cockers still have breed features. Ive seen Cockapoos that look like Cockers, ones that look like Poodles and ones that look nothing like either! How is a breed suppose to breed true if people are STILL breeding a Cocker to a Poodle to get a Cockapoo?? It's not. And until everyone gets off of this designer mix breed fad...it probably never will.

And I really have to disagree with your saying they are the most lovable and smartest dogs out there. After years of grooming, I put a Cockapoo on my top list of breeds likely to bite.

Cockapoos have been being bred for 40 years now & STILL do not breed 'true', as they are breeding from 2 very different looking dogs. More than petitioning the AKC is required - they do not have to accept. Cockapoo 'breeders' are just rattling their cages a little louder to sell more of their mutts to a gullible public. Especailly since their own marketing ploy has now created competion in the way of 'Puggles' & 'Labradoodles' - P.T. Barnum said it best: "There's a sucker born every minute"

A big part of the issue is that if people had healthy, high quality cockers and poodles, they would be using them for a breeding progam to improve that breed.

The reason it irks most of us is that there are millions of adoptable animals being euthanized every year. So why make more mixed breeds?

What would the PURPOSE of having the new breed be? What standards would you set? How would they fit a need that's not already being met by other purebreds?

Edited to add: I think you may lack the attention to detail that's necessary for a good breeder, as this is listed in the Birds category.
