I have a cat that gets a thicker, fluffier, and darker coat around the same time every year during the colder months. My other cats don't do this. I was thinking maybe some breeds grow winter coats.

I believe that it depends on the breed of cat. I have two cats. One is a tabbie, and his fur stays the same year round. My other cat is a Manx. The breed is from Scotland, and his coat gets noticeably thicker in the winter months.

I also noticed that his coat is visibly thicker in the winter since I moved to the East Coast from Southern California, so temperature may also play a roll in it.

Even when a cat is kept inside, it will grow a thicker coat. You'll also notice when it's spring time, the cat will lose a lot of it's fur. My cat has always been an indoors cat and she is long haired, but in the winter her coat gets a lot thicker. Your other cats may not grow as a heavier one as the first but they do produce more hair in the winter.

Domesticated house cats stay inside houses so there's not really a need for them to grow thicker fur. But they are independent and go outside on their own free will a lot, so it's hard to say.
