How big are your leg muscles now? If they are already large, they will not likely get larger. Even if they are just average size, running or jogging will not necessarily increase the size of your leg muscles. The type of running will optimize your leg muscles for that specific action. For example, if you run a lot of short, fast sprints, your leg muscles, particularly the thigh muscles, will become optimized for that action which requires larger muscles. If you run long distances, the muscles will become optimized for that, which means medium-size muscles. Just look at the olympic-level runners and you will see that the ones who run the 100 meter or 200 meter events have fairly large thighs while the marathon runners are thin overall, including their thighs.
Doing squats will tend to optimize the muscles for that heavy lifting which requires large thigh muscles. But you will need to do a lot of squats each day to notice the increase. Riding hills on a bicycle will do the same thing.
Lean legs are the result of toning which involves burning away the intramuscular fat. You cannot burn fat on a spot location basis. Any fat deposit in any part of your body will burn away as you do excercize for long intervals, such as 30 minutes at a time or longer.
Testosterone also has an effect on muscle gain so you will notice that women weight lifters are usually not as bulky as the men.

Squating with weights will make the muscle mass increase more so they would get bulkier, and jogging or running would define the muscles and add less bulk...so do both to round out the legs with size and definition.

Squats are the way to bigger legs. Jogging will keep your legs toned, but will not make them bigger. Do you know of any elite marathoners who have big muscular legs? Now runners of the sprint type will have muscular bodies, due to the nature of their anaerobic training and weight lifting. Just remember endurance type of training will overtake muscle building properties if that's your main focus.

I don't understand if you want bigger legs or smaller? If smaller then you should run and not do squats or leg lifts. If you've ever seen marathon runners their legs are like toothpicks. Even Lance Armstrong had problems running a marathon because his legs were much heavier and more muscular than the champion marathon runners. Bikers have heavier legs. Rowing also builds up your legs big time.

I have found that walking for maybe 5 miles a day will define your muscles (sexy) and tone the muscles and give you leaner, shaplier legs, plus strength. Of course, I'm answering from a female's point of view.

If you want bigger thighs do squats...they will be ripped!
Running wont get you lean, unless you go on a diet..and run all the time probably...
Squats work the best..I do squats..

doing squats in high reps will rip your muscles and define your muscles. In running/jogging as in high rep squats you elongate your muscles and define them. If you look at weight lifters of low reps and sprinters they bulk up their muscles . Long distance runners and low rep squatters define their muscles and elongate them. Hope this helps.

like weight training. to bulk muscles you need to increase the amount of weight lifted. running only has your body weight

i've been in track and field and cross country and my legs are still skinny so i don't think running will help.
