Well according to wikipedia it is traditionally since 1060 served chilled. I was looking up some recipe's and there is a good coffee eggnog drink that is hot....perhaps....? I don't think it is weird to have it hot, but I think most people think of it as chilled.

HOLIDAY EGGNOG 2 large eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 quarts milk 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 2 cups heavy whipping cream ground nutmeg In heavy 4-quart saucepan, with wire whisk, beat eggs, sugar, and salt until blended. Gradually stir in 1 quart milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon well, about 25 minutes (mixture should be about 170 F to 175 F. but do not boil or it will curdle).Pour custard into large bowl; stir in vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and remaining milk. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled, about 3 hours. To serve, in small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat heavy or whipping cream until soft peaks form. with wire whisk, gently fold whipped cream into custard mixture. Pour eggnog into chilled 5-quart punch bowl; sprinkle with ground nutmeg. Serving Size: 16. EGGNOG 6 eggs 1 c. sugar 2 c. cream 2 c. milk 2 c. Seagram's 7 Crown 1 oz. Captain Morgan's spiced rum Nutmeg Beat yolks and whites separately. Add 1/2 cup sugar to each. Beat whites very stiff. Mix whites with yolks. Stir in cream, milk, Crown and rum. Stir thoroughly. Serve cold with nutmeg. Or you could just go and buy it at grocery store. If you want the rum in it, just add to taste. I always drank it cold.

HOT with a splash of alcohol. One year the store bought eggnog tasted and smelled like raw eggs which was unappetizing so I warmed it and added alcohol. It stuck.
