Do you think the shortage of priests might be non-existent if Catholic parents encouraged their young boys to consider being a priest? (Instead of assuming they'll either be married or single)

i do agree with you in a manner of speaking. parents her ein the US want their children to have more and more - material items andmoney are more important. there are some families that still relish the fact that a child has a calling. i know of a few from within my own schooling. none from my own grades but from some above and below. in other countried, it is still a great honor to have a c hild become a priest or a nun. if you go to rome you can see scads of young priests and nuns, however those that are in the US are generally from another country,

It is sad that there is a shortage of priests. There is so much responsibility on the shoulders of a priest. If a person wants to be a priest and married they should look to converting to Eastern Orthodoxy. It is the first christian church. Catholics are a branch off from Orthodox. Our priest can marry prior to becomming a priest. In fact, men are encouraged to wait to be ordained until they marry.

No, in fact, that is what led to all these abuses in the Church. The Catholic Church needs to emphasize discernment (which it is realizing) and guide young men who may not be hearing God's call to hear it and guide those who God is not calling to the priesthood to realize that too. No matter what one's vocation is, it has it's challenges. If a person chooses the wrong path, that cross will be much harder to bear.
