You really need to go to an orthodontic office and have them do an evaluation on your 12 year old's teeth. My daughter had a really bad overbite, her bottom teeth were fine, but they were braced too. He had to remove some teeth because it was really crowded. Then she had braces for about 3 years in different styles and it to all evened out.
Check your dental insurance, they usually pay 50% of the total cost of any orthodontic work. Full mouth braces, including all the monthly visits to change and tighten each month, runs about $2,000. You can also work deals with most dental offices, you don't pay the full amount all at once, its spread out over years with little or no interest.

I just signed a contract for my 15 y/o for "just the bottom front" over $4000....they say they have to put braces on top and bottom for a good "fit" and for chewing. Most orthodontists will to a free evaluation. Ask about a payment plan if you cannot afford to pay up front, a lot of them will let you make payments. I found one who did not require a down payment....he gets a lot of business!
