Alright, there is this man I know who is roughly 20 years older than me. (I'm 24 and female) I neither like him nor dislike him. When we first met through a friend, we spoke a little bit, but nothing that meant anything. After that, I noticed that when he thought I wasn't looking at him (I saw him from the corner of my eye) he would stare at me (gosh that man has blue eyes!) When I look at him, however, he avoids my eyes like the plague. There was one time I saw him in the parking lot while he was talking to someone else, I looked his way, and he stared at me. I once saw him at the grocery store, he saw me, and darted the other way. "Okay" I thought "Fine if you don't like me and want to avoid me, I don't care!" Two meetings ago (after it was a while since I last saw him) he was open and friendly and asked how I was. I thought he was just being polite, since I basically bumped into him. The last meeting, we were at a party of the friend's house. He still avoided eye contact

But, this time he came up to me and asked me what kind of drink I wanted. Up until then, I just thought he didn't like me and wanted to avoid me, but now I'm beginning to think, does he like me...?

I don't want to make the first move. I don't like him that way. I just wanted to know if he likes me or is just avoiding me, and while at the party, was just polite

Okay, I like him a bit (...) But I can't, nor can he like me... He is an instructor at the same university I go to (even though I have never had him as my teacher).

It sounds like the old fear of rejection. See if a man sees an attractive woman he is prone to just know the woman would not give him a second thought. So even though he will look, and stare, it is better not to say a thing. This keeps being shot down from happening. It is like a dance floor, the guy walks across to ask a woman to dance. She says no, now he has to walk all the way back across that same floor. Everyone knows she told him no, and feels two foot tall. Ask him to meet for coffee, or a drink. This way he knows he can approach you without rejection. This takes a bit of self confidence on your part.

Sounds like he is shy or afraid of getting rejected cuz of his age. Make the 1st move.
