All plants need a little salt which they take in through the roots. If too much salt is present in the soil or the water it builds up in the cells of the plant and disrupts chemical processes causing the plants growth to be stunted or killing it. If the concentration of salt in the water is high enough water bill be sucked out of the plant rather than into it killing it quickly.

Microwaved water does not make any difference to plants. The source for the stories seems to be a page about a school science project which used two plants and the one which received microwaved water died.
The experiment has been repeated several times under more rigorous conditions and the water has been found to make no difference.
There are several reasons why the plant could have died but heating the water in a microwave is not one of them.

The experimenter has used a two cuttings and two potted plants in the site referred to one of the answers. While this is cause for some concern, the experiment would mean more if there were ten or more plants, preferably of different species. Another test using conventionally boiled water might show similar or no results too.

Salt water kills most plants three ways. Excess sodium, excess chloride, inability to overcome the osmotic pressure differential between the fresh water in the plant cells and the salt outside across the cell membrane. Plants are osmotic water pumps.
