The more extreme things being said by fundamentalists make people question their religious views. Those who were nominally Christian before have become 'turned off' by seeing the religious right being used by politicians. Famous and influential evangelists being caught in scandals adds to this skepticism. Among the numbers of those who question God's existence are also those who now accept other, non-Christian, views as being real and valid. Some of those who are now unsure if God exists have narrowed their views, becoming more atheistic, while others have broadened their views to include more interpretations of the Divine than just what Christianity offers, while others have gotten sick of the extremism and manipulation of the faithful by greedy oil barons.

Where is this Harris Poll? ( a link would be useful)
Being UNSURE that God exists does not mean that they do not believe that he exists...
I guess this 42% are the children under the age of 10.

I feel sorry for this 42% Americans..
Maybe they are just questioning God's existence. I, myself, sometimes think of this. Though afterall, I still believe in Him.
It hurts me more than anything else to see posts like "Good, we're growing up or People are getting wiser, and they don't have to believe what they are told anymore and Education is an eye-opener." You guys claim to be intellectual people. I think you're all just misguided.. May God still reserve a place for you in heaven

Isn't it ironic that people would question God's existance but when something bad happens, God is the first one they blame? Let's see, with all of the crime, rape, murder. Why would God allow this to happen. They have separated the church from the state, my own opinion is that was a big mistake. Kids arn't being educated about God. Therefore, they don't know him. Society teaches us that if you can't see it, it doesn't exist. I't's everywhere and a lot of americans let it just sink into their brains.

Probably because 3 years ago they didn't have 2000+ war dead from an essentially religious war (aka killing eachother over who has the best invisible friend). This may not be how we in the west see it, but to the iraqis and afghans, it is deffinately a jihad.
If I was an american christian, I'd be starting to wonder how a god can exist that gets his followers to slaughter eachoher just because they disagree whether jesus is the son of god and whether mohammed is a prophet.

Believe it or not, there is a Biblical answer. The Bible makes it clear to us that the earth will grow more and more atheistic as the years go by. In a few generations, that number will dip into single digits and Christianity will be all but outlawed.
So really, all the gloating you guys are doing over society becoming more secular, that just reinforces what our scripture says.

Well with all of the apostacy within the churches today it is not hard to see why people would lose faith. The problem is they are losing faith in the wrong place. to lose your faith in man as a leader..religious or political is easy to do because all men make mistakes and are subject to doing the very things they speak out against. However, God has never lied, remains constant, loves you for what you are not what you have done, and will never forsake you. Therefore you faith should be planted firmly on the foundation that is Jesus and let man do what he will...your faith should not be shakeable.

Because it is a rational conclusion to an idea of which there can be no proof. As we head into the future and more and more people have access to higher education you will see this trend grow.

Interesting, isn't it? Our educational system grows worse by the day...
third world countries pass us up in math and science...
we ship all our manufacturing jobs overseas...
homosexuality and pornography are socially acceptable
and the country loses their grip on God.
Coincidence?
