I gave him this after a bout of GI problems, per the Vet, but after symptoms went away he continued to like it better than dog food.

IT does not have the proper vitamins and minerals that dogs need. Use a good kibble and mix the chicked and rice in with it.

You need to feed your Yorkie a good well balanced dog food. I give my Yorkies chicken and rice on their birthdays or special occasions, but that is not an adequate diet for them all the time. My Yorkies love it too, so make it a special occasion treat for them. Sometimes, I will cook chicken and keep it in the fridge and give them little bites for treats during the day. If they correctly use their litter box I will give them each a small piece to encourage them.

It may take your dog a while to get use to eating dog food again, but it is important for nutritional purposes. Talk to your vet if the dog refuses to eat for a while. The dog my have digestive problems that can be solved with a prescription diet.

Dogs don't eat just meat, they also eat liver, kidneys and the stomach and intestines and their contents. Meat alone is not a balanced diet.
They also don't need a varied diet.

Chicken and rice will give protein and carbohydrate; but not trace elements like vitamins and minerals.
And don't exceed the dose. Ask your vet for advice.
If you are happy to make your own dog food and your dog enjoys it then all you need to do is learn about canine nutrition.
You can add cooked grated carrot and spinach, you can freeze portions in ice cube trays so only need to prepare it once a week.
You can also add a vitamin and mineral supplement if it is made for dogs. And don't exceed the dose. Ask your vet for advice.
Your dog will also need something to chew, raw carrot sticks are ideal and rawhide chews and dog biscuit are also good.
Plus you'll need to clean his teeth every day. Especially the top back teeth on the outside edge; these are the ones that get dirty first.

Slowly switch over to a high quality dry and/or canned dog food. Ask your vet for recommendations as to an easily digestible food that will hopefully prevent any future GI upset.
Although he may eat the diet of chicken and rice for a long time without any problems, it will eventually cause malnourishment as it does not contain the proper balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, along with vitamins and minerals, that dogs need.
Good luck!

What you are feeding your yorkie is the best. I have always fed mine fresh. The only improvement you should make is to put some veg in there for him so he gets the vitamins he needs, even if you have to put them in the blender and mix them in with the juices from the cooked chicken and give him an egg every week for his coat and the extra protein. Please don't listen to people trying to tell you to give your dog commercial dog foods, if you do your research properly on the net you will find out that when they invented commercial dog foods in the 60's they were just trying to get rid of all the mountains of waste Dead/Diseased/De-composing meats and cereals that were not fit for human consumption, and nothing has changed since then, I'm sure like me you wouldn't want to give your best friend anything you wouldn't want to eat yourself and shorten his lifespan? Before they brought out commercial dog foods, dogs used to live a lot longer and were more healthier. Also when your vets tell you you have to give the dog a booster every year, it's all profit, be warned they dont need to be done more than every 3 years, my best friends dog passed away at 6yrs old with cancer caused by over vaccinating, you can research both of these subjects online on a number of sites.

it's all right..but it is not filled with the vitamins a dog properly needs. You should try to mix some dog food in with it. Dont try to change it too suddenly. FOr example, dont give it cooked rice and chicken one day and then dog food the next day. Gradually change it. first, but 3/4s rice and chicken and 1/4 dog food. then gradually put the dog food up. That should help the dog get used to dog food better.

I hope i helped!

I had bought a dog recipe cook book. First of all even though the dog enjoys the chicken and rice they need veggies, they need supplements. You should give him a good quality dry dog food as well. My both dogs lived till 18 and I cooked chicken and rice and various other foods but I also added supplements and made sure they had their dry. If you only give wet you will be rest assured your Yorkies teeth will rot very quickly as well. So dry and give the chicken and rice as well. You can coat the dry but not enough to remove the benefits of the dry for their teeth but it will make your yorkie alot happeir of course. You can give baby carrots cut in small pieces for treats but veggies and small amounts of fruits not alot. But it is healthy for them.

My boyfriend is a K-9 police officer. We feed both our dogs frozen or raw chicken and they are the healthiest dogs I've seen. At the K-9 academy they feed the same thing. Meat is all dogs eat in the wild. Even the bones are ok as long as they are not cooked (you don't see coyotes and foxes giving each other the heimlich maneuver!). The other plus side to meat is that their poop is very dry and disintegrates quickly in the yard, they digest so much of it. One thing however is to makesure that you dog has access to grass. Wouldn't recommend rice.....it's not natural for dogs.

My yorkie (douglas) has been the worst eater you can imagine from the day we got him at 9 weeks .I have given away as much food as i have brought for him.He loves chicken but I knew it was not enough for him to have all the time. The only dinner I have really got him to eat on a regular basis is cesar cuisine and I must admit he will eat it after reading the label to him and getting him all excited ,like he is being given a treat .Sad ayy but they are fussy eaters especially when they are spoit like mine.Depends on how you are with your dog,but try it my way.It did work.

like humans animals have to have a balanced diet. I suggest you ask your vet about specific dietry needs your dog has. Most vets stock special food for special needs. Chicken and rice are not enough hard stuff to keep his teeth healthy. perhaps he can have specific chews too. Good luck.
