Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 – April 7, 1947) He was the founder of the Ford Motor Company and father of the modern assembly line used in mass production. His introduction of the Model T automobile revolutionized transportation and American industry. He was a prolific inventor and was awarded 161 U.S. patents. As sole owner of the Ford Company he became one of the richest and best-known people in the world. He is credited with "Fordism", that is, the mass production of large numbers of inexpensive automobiles using the assembly line, coupled with high wages for his workers—notably the $5 a day pay scale adopted in 1914. Ford, though poorly educated, had a global vision, with consumerism as the key to peace. His intense commitment to lowering costs resulted in many technical and business innovations, including a franchise system that put a dealership in every city in North America, and in major cities on six continents. Ford left most of his vast wealth to the Ford Foundation, but arranged for his family to control the company permanently

Anyone of that stature will have a host of positive and negative history behind them. He was born on7/30/1863 and died on 4/7/47 and is buried in the Ford Cemetery. He was rumored to be very generous to his favorite charities, but would turn his back on others. He was known to be anti-***** and anti-Semitic. He hated blacks and Jews. I heard a rumor that one time when he was trying to raise money, a group of investors from Minneapolis, Minnesota contacted him and had the money. After a few days he turned them down. The reason was supposed to be that there were ten men in the investment group and one was German and the other was Jewish. I wasn't there, so I cannot attest if it true or not. Go to www.findagrave.com and you can see his grave.

OK, you know about his cars, and the production line, but did you know: he:
Built and drove race cars early in his career to demonstrate that his engineering designs produced reliable vehicles?
Financed a pacifist expedition to Europe during WWI?
Adopted a paternalistic policy to reform his workers' lives both at home and at work?
Was an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate in 1918?
Owned a controversial newspaper, The Dearborn Independent, that published anti-Jewish articles which offended many and tarnished his image?
Promoted the early use of aviation technology?
Built Village Industries, small factories in rural Michigan, where people could work and farm during different seasons, thereby bridging the urban and rural experience?
Sought ways to use agricultural products in industrial production, including soybean-based plastic automobile components such as this experimental automobile trunk?
Was one of the nation's foremost opponents of labor unions in the 1930s and was the last automobile manufacturer to unionize his work force?
Mobilized his factories for the war effort and produced bombers, Jeeps, and tanks for World War II?
Established schools in several areas of the country that provided educational experiences based on traditional one room school techniques, modern teaching methods, and "learning through doing"?
Established an indoor/outdoor museum--The Henry Ford--to preserve historical items that illustrated the American experience and American ingenuity?

he was a fascist of sorts but he made our modern world too in a way for better or worse. he gave every one a raise to 5 dollars an hour when they where making about 2 or 3 so back then that's like making 20 or 30 dollars an hour and then making 50! but that was because so many people left because it was all hand made and hard work and not like today and you worked long hrs. back then. and i think when the white workers went on strike he hired black but after a while they went on strike too! and he was the first to put cars on an Assembly line which made them easy to build even though some People believed he invented cars and the Assembly line he invented neither but made both faster and cheaper but after awhile every one copied him they no longer bought his model t and since he just made the model t and he just gave it the color black because it would dry faster people wanted a different car Even though the car back then went for as low as 700 dollars! and did you know it got better gas mileage than the average car today but it was slow too!

I've been through the museum here in Ft Myers, where he had a winter home next to Thomas Edison. He was good friends with Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs.

You have many good answers, but in response to the "fact" that he was the "father" of the modern assembly line, He was not the originator. This process belongs to the founder of Olds. (I forget his name)
He also fought against giving his workers paid breaks in the middle of the day, after the workers received this, he forced a longer work day.

he was the first one to make the assembly line work,
he was the first one to give his workers much more money than anyone else
I think he also started what we call it now, the minimum wage, and he raised it above other employees.
I think he also had the first two working shifts, first shift and second shift,
he also made the first consistent engine block time after time, so they could be mass produced so the vehicles could be sold cheaper to the USA public.
good luck
