Try tickets for his favorite sports team or band! A gift card is too impersonal, let him know you've taken the effort to find something he enjoys. It's the thought that counts!

if he's a drinker - a nice flask, maybe monogramed. If he smokes - a nice lighter. A magazine subscription, a nice shirt. If he wears jewlery, get him a nice necklace. Or tickets to a sporting event

Something that is sentimental. Like a picture in a pretty frame, or something special that has to do with something that's close to him. You don't have to buy anything, you can just be creative.
