I spent a year doing volunteer work in new zealand so had a volunteer visa. Is it now possible for me go back to the country with a working visa? Or will I have difficulties trying to get another visa of any kind?

I have already left New Zealand & am looking at going back.

The two visas have nothing to do with one another. You were here on a volunteer visa, great, did that; now you want a work visa, shouldn't be a problem if you fulfill the criteria (check www.immigration.gov.nz), and I don't think the criteria say "must not have held a volunteer visa before".
:-)
To get a work visa, read what it says on the homepage. If you have a job offer already, it should be easy, and if you don't, it may still be possible. Good luck.

I would imagine you would need to depart and come back in, as generally it's easier to apply for a visa outside the country.

Have a look at immigration.govt.nz, there should be heaps of information.
