Right there at the website for the American Chi club it says that Teacups are not a type of chihuahua. They are made up by terrible breeders to extract more money from the undereducated public who are dying to look like Paris Hilton and Mischa Barton. For the AKC, the Chi club of America, and ANY reputable breeder, the stock answer to your question would be "The second anyone says Teacup, run away as fast as you can!" So, if your breeder is ignoring this rule, what else is he ignoring? Shots? Genetic problems? Health problems? Socialization? Simple welfare?

Minni C's advice is just plain terrible. One of the *worst* places to buy a dog is from a newspaper ad or a pennysaver ad. TERRIBLE! And being an AKC dog doesn't guarantee a darn thing other than the parents are registered. It CERTAINLY doesn't guarantee health. Some AKC dogs are the unhealthiest dogs around - due to poor breeding from backyard breeders.

From the Chihuahua Club Of America (link to statement in "Source" area. )

"Tea Cup Statement
The Chihuahua Is A Chihuahua

The Official AKC Breed Standard describes the Chihuahua as a small dog that comes in two varieties or coat types. The difference in coat type (the Long Coat and the Smooth Coat) is the only official description used to identify a difference within this breed. Our standard does not categorize the Chihuahua by size.

For the purpose of showing and record keeping, the American Kennel club includes the Chihuahua (along with 19 other breeds) in the Toy Group. Therefore, irrespective of their weight or physical stature ALL Chihuahuas registered with the AKC are considered to be a toy breed of dog.

As with all living things, there will be size variance between individual dogs within this breed. Look within the human family - brothers and sisters will differ in height and in weight, as well as other physical attributes. They are described as humans, male or female, and there is seldom if ever a need to break the description down further. The same holds true in regard to the Chihuahua; they are Chihuahuas - Long Coat / Smooth Coat!

Unfortunately, the additional adjectives used to describe the size differences and physical appearances are many and have been misused for so long they now seem legitimate. Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard - are just a few of the many tags and labels that have been attached to this breed over the years. The Chihuahua Club of America is concerned that these terms may be used to entice prospective buyers into thinking that puppies described in this way are of greater monetary value. They are not and the use of these terms is incorrect and misleading.

Occasionally, within a litter, there may be a puppy that is unusually small. That puppy is a small Chihuahua and any other breakdown in description is not correct. To attach any of these additional labels to a particular puppy is to misrepresent that Chihuahua as something that is rare or exceptional and causes a great deal of confusion among those new fanciers who are looking for a Chihuahua.

The Chihuahua Club of America does not endorse nor condone the use of any of these terms and would caution the perspective puppy buyer not to be misled by them.

We recognize that many Chihuahua fanciers do want the very small puppy. While they are adorable and can be perfectly healthy, the buyer should be cautioned as to the extra care that may be required with regard to their general health and well-being. "

I know of several breeders of Chihuahuas in NY....however, you are looking for a BYB since show breeders and what we call "good" or "real" breeders do not breed "teacup" Chi's. They breed for the STANDARD, which teacups aren't. There is a reason they are not suppose to be that small. Health problems increase greatly when you breed something to be bigger or smaller than it should be.
Buyer beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As everyone has said, teacup dogs are usually in bad health and suffer a great deal. Which means that you will not only spend a bundle on a sick dog but also a bundle on Vet bills. I would suggest getting a regular chihuauhaua. They are small anyway.

www.breeders.net is a link the American Kennel Club offers on their website for pure breed dogs. I found both my Yorkies on there. There are very good reputable breeders on this site. You just put in your zip code and the type of dog you are looking for and it gives you breeders near you.

Oh provide up! do not help greater breeding. there are distinctive purebred chihuahuas in breed-particular rescue businesses or the Humane Society. those canines are crying out for a solid homestead. Why could you like a doggy? bear in innovations, doggies pee and poop throughout till housebroken. they additionally require care. Do you artwork finished-time? visit college? Who would be with the doggy while you're long previous? you won't be able to go away a doggy on my own for hours and hours - which would be not in basic terms merciless yet neglectful. They require greater care than that. you will better sit down down and positioned your thinking cap on and inspect this lots greater thoughtfully than you have. And do you have the funds to shelter a residing being? Annual vet visits, immunizations, and the teeth cleanings value funds.

Oh my goodness! Everyone is so right. My best friend bought a tcup chi's and they both suffered so much. The dog was very sickly with neurological disorders and my friend was devastated to see this poor dog suffer. Yeah, they may be cute, but thier cuteness is bred at the expense of their health. Its very sad and unfortunate, I know. Would a standard chi interest you? How about if you researched other breeds? When it comes to a pet, research research, research is necessary. Good Luck!!!

There is no such thing as a teacup chihuahua. They are just the (often sickly) runt of the litter.
Do some research about chihuahuas before you decide they are the right breed for you.
