hello is more formal and hi is more friendly and can be used with friends but when speaking to someone of a higher merit than oneself (like a professor) hello is more proper

Same meaning, different languages originally.
Hello! is English. Hi! is Japanese.
Both are greetings though Hi! has become more familiar and is used by younger people in UK.
Hello can be used as an interogative to try to catch someone's attention. Hi can't.

Hi is very familiar and is used between friends,family, people who get on well and young people. Hello is more formal and used with all kinds of people.It is probably more polite as well.

Hello is a whole word. Hi is short for Hiya, which is short for hi y'all or Hi you all. A nod is even shorter again. Hi is up, hell is below [totally run out of ideas now]

Very similar to each other...
I guess Hi is more intimate, casual...
Also: you don't pick up the phone and say: Hi... you say Hello... because you don't know the person who is calling... it's more formal, I guess.

hi is more often used in person and hello over the phone.

It's exactly the same thing but 'hi' is a little bit more casual!

one is spelt hi and the other is spelt hello. that's the only difference.
