some of these answers r a joke.....pull ur tape from either end u want to start from......hook over the bottom plate and measure 15 1/4"......make a mark, a straight line across the plate, put an "X" ahead of the mark, this will help u remember which side of the line to set the stud on( cover the "X" ).....

from that first mark ( the 15 1/4" mark) pull ur tape and mark every 16".....16-32-48-ect.....dont forget the "X" each time ....

forget everything else that has been written.start from either end and measure in 15-1/4 inches and mark that spot then drive a nail on the mark, hook your tape on the nail and measure 16 inches the rest of the way across.square down(or across if framing wall)from these marks and install framing flush with these lines to have everything square up right. with standard 2 inch(actually 1-1/2)material this will give you 16 inches on center all the way across.go to corner oposite from where you started and repeat in same direction.

16 On Center Framing

16" inch centers is the same as 16" from left edge to left edge of the next one.

If you're doing standard framing, why cut some of your blocking early and use them as "spacers". Then confirm the layout with a tape (and a pencil mark) at top plate and bottom plate before nailing?

Blocks are intended to fit between the studs, so they are 14-1/2" long (16 minus 1-1/2" stud thickness).

Wow. This is hard to explain.
If you're centering for exterior siding (like T1-11, or similar 4' by 8' siding), burn (overhang) however many inches you need for wall connections (nothing if the wall your laying out is the corner overlap, or 3.5" [for 2 by 4 walls] or 5.5" [for 2 by 6 walls] if the other walls overlap the corner. Then burn .75 inch (to create the center you need).
If you're centering for interior drywall or etc., burn only the .75 inch to creat the center.
Dont know how clear that is. But I hope it helps.
