Older "first generation" antidepressents are available as generic medications. You seem to be referring to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's) which is the class that most people try first. They are most commonly used, noted to have a better side effect profile, and have an easier dosing schedule. Of the SSRI's, Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, and Zoloft are available as generics. The only one that is not that is currently on the market is Lexapro.
