Because, primative humans fear such creatures so they instinctively use them as the "bad guy"
Just like how every culture has their different versions of dragons. Who all share similar traits, Breast head(lions), long scaly bodies( reptials and snakes) and sharp talons ( mean eating birds)
all the things that prayed on early humans.

Because of the story of Adam and Eve. The serpent symbolizes the temptation for evil things or the symbol for medicine; so he can be harmfull or cure people. The basis of all religions is to receive a reward for good actions or being punished for bad actions. So the serpent fits into religion thinking.

Since the Garden of Eden, the "serpent" is the symbol representing the enemy of our souls, the deceiver.
A similar concept is "dragon", as this is both a synonym for serpent, as well as the descriptor for other large reptiles of that time.
Very few, if any, dragons still exist. With the discovery of gun powder and modern weaponry, most have been driven to extinction, though the historical references to them are inescapable.
All we find are their bones today, and the uninformed call them "dinosaurs" and tell fantastic tales of epics supposedly occurring "millions of years ago".
Keep seeking.

you are correct in this,it seems to be a theme reaching way back to the beginning of religion, it really only makes sense if the serpent is linked to lucifer who is the serpent of the Bible, and the one that Jesus Himself called that old serpent.
if you believe in the biblical story of the fall of lucifer and the fact that this happened before God created Men& Women then it is easy to see that lucifer would have been around since primative times to cast himself as a God to be worshipped, and how this would have taken root in the primative cultures.

Because that's what freaks people out, and it's more meaningful than mentioning bugs. If Eve was tempted by a bug that wouldn't be very interesting. But why did you add "Or is it just me?"? Is it just you what? What exactly did you mean by that little add-on? I find that very suspicious, and I for one would appreciate it if you would explain that.
