The beast, or wild beast, is symbolic of an authority raised against God, being lawless, capricious and unrestrained and trampling or tearing the people to submission. The number describes the mark or name of the man through whom this authority is excercised.

The problem with everyones answers is that 666 wasn't the original number of the beast. In the original translations of the bible it was 616. I can't remember the significance of this (there is more hebrew significance to this than to 666) but we had a lecture on it last year.
