Ignore the noobs who say nothing can be done.
You can try this software

Or, if you are prepared to pay real money, there are a range of professional 'data recovery' firms who can get data off almost any drive. Not cheap but possible.

Unless you take it some computer forensic expart, who charges quite a bit I guess, the data is gone. My friend told me about some programs that analyze the harddisk and can re-create files even after formatting but I never paid too much attention. Check out unerase software or something along those lines on a search engine. If the data isn't/wasn't worth much just forget about it coz you might end up spending way too much time over nothing.
sorry couldn't be of more help

you can to an extent but it is better left to professtionals as it is easy to corrupt data....see, when you delete a file, is just frees up that space for your os to write over it and the data is still there until its written over.....installing or defragmenting will usually cause the majority of your files to be lost, but it's worth a try. PC Inspector File Recovery 4.0 is a free app that I like to use personally http://majorgeeks.com/PC_Inspector_File_Recovery_d2463.html but there is a slim chance you will find a lot. If you did a complete reformat, slim chances but in the future, i recommend creating a backup partition to save files on so if you do have to reformat, you can do so to the partition with the os on it and your backup partition will be fine..sorry for the confusion, but this is a very complex problem to solve in most cases

They probably reloaded the hard drive with a factory image to restore it. There's not much chance any files survived intact. The guys who repaired it would have had to have gotten whatever files off the hard drive they could before they redid it.
Since the file table will probably be a new one, you can't just use an undelete program.

When your laptop crashed, if you took it to be repaired some place, did they have to reinstall the operating system? If the operating system was reinstalled, the hard drive was reformatted all of your old data is gone.

it all depends what crashed. if it was just a minor crash, it should still be there. if the repair place reinstalled the operating system, i really doubt it. If the place backs it up, they might have all the files.
