I would go for the original, that way you can ask around and see if anyone else has had it.

i have two daughters, ages (just turned) 5 and 6, as well as my godson, who is still 4.
i bought my first leap pads, they played with them for a week or two
i bought the real leap pad and they didn't have interest in that at all, that is the one where you put the pen up to the words and they read.
then i bought the leapster, which is the handheld game, i had to get the charger with it and more games they take them in the car, they take them to bed, they take them everywhere. walmart has a special right now, for just the price of the leapster you get the leapster, carrying case, and a game called letter pillar. if you check on ebay, they have all the leap pad books for almost nothing since they aren't really used much. kids lose interest. the leapster is still around the price you pay in the store and it's much higher demand. first of all, your five year old son will learn sight words first, such as and, the, that, is, etc. it's more important for him to learn in a fun manner and play games than to set him down and teach him something you can teach him and he will learn in school.
TRUST ME ON THIS< GET THE LEAPSTER, THE "CARS" GAME, AND "SPONGE BOB" TO START. I CAN GUARANTEE HE WILL LOVE IT. before you give it to him to add to the excitement, tell him how good he is and you are getting this game for him since he's so good. he will love it

You should buy both of them. Both of them teaches fundamental skills that your son should know before going into kindergarten.
