Galatians 5 speaks of the "works of the flesh."
Among them is the sin of witchcraft. The Greek word Paul used for witchcraft is the word "pharmacea" (sp?). It is the same root word from which our English word pharmacy is derived from.
Witches, Shamans, Medicine Men, witch doctors, etc, were noted in tribal rites to use such potions to get themselves into altered states of consciousness to perform healings, have visions, and to cast spells. When man's own spirit has been impaired, other spirits enter in. The verse also mentions drunkeness. There is a reason why alcohol is referred to as "spirits."
It would seem from Paul's inspired writings that mood altering chemicals would be prohibited in the life of an individual professing faith in Jesus Christ alone.

There is no direct, specific law against pot in the bible.
People will tell you that your body is a temple and not to defile it as a way of getting around the fact that there
are no specifics against various things. Given the
meaning and intent of that verse, you should probably
straighten up and fly right if you really want to believe
what the bible says and follow its teachings.
On a more personal level, pot will get you into serious
trouble, and is against the law in most localities. Why
flirt with danger? Try fishing, skiing, mountain climbing,
horse back riding, scuba diving, or surfing if you want to have fun.

Culturally, lots of Christians seem to think it is wrong, because of ascetic or puritan beliefs- that is, if something feels good, it is worldly and sinful, and that living strictly and denying yourself as many pleasures as possible is desirable.
However, many of these same people hypocritically enjoy rich foods and fine clothes, luxuries and entertainment, and even drink alcohol without a second thought.
There *are* biblical warnings against drunkenness, but seems to hold a favorable view of wine. Marijuana is not directly mentioned at all.
The drug was well known and commonly used in biblical times, and was mostly free of the bad reputation it has gained in only the last 70 years.
I do not believe that marijuana use has a "destructive effect."
I believe that marijuana ABUSE (addictive, excessive, or irresponsible use) has a destructive effect.
(This is consistent with the way the bible treats alcohol.)
Since people (especially most Christians) have grown up in a culture that equates any use with abuse, they are unable to make that distinction.
The bible says pretty clearly that none of God's plants are 'bad.'
Anything taken to excess, that becomes an addicition, that takes over your life, is bad, and it has nothing to do with Christianity.
Edit:
If you want to argue that a Good Christian must always follow the laws of the country they live in, then that's your opinion, however I disagree with it. It assumes human lawmakers are morally infallible.
A few people mentioned that it opens up places your mind "isn't supposed to" go, or something to that effect. Seems to be equating it with the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge. But why should any natural human experiences be off-limits to us?
And why does our brain have cannabinoid receptors in it? Why do all these plants and fungi have chemicals that our brains are set up to respond to in a certain way?

The lord may have created a situation in which the plant marijuana could grow, but it is incorrect to seek happiness from a source outside of yourself. If you are truly honest with yourself you will see that the only reason you are going to smoke pot is to have fun, feel good, or fit in. All of these motives are manifestations of the desire in all of us to be happy, which is an unattainable goal if you seek to reach that end through outside means. The only way to true happiness is to give and receive true love through action and word to you higher power, to others, and to yourself.

Its true that God put it on this Earth, but do you think he meant for it to be used for those purposes? Yes, if you're looking for a Christian answer, it is wrong to smoke pot. It says in the Bible 'You are the Lord's temple' and that whatever you do to Lord's temple, you do to Him. Dont desecrate the Lord's temple. Hope that helps you out! :)

Drug doing is something that has been going on for thousands of years. The ancients called it "pharmakeia". The problem with it is that it inhibits the mind and keeps you from making sound choices. Also, the ancients would use drugs to see into the spirit world, which is something that we are not supposed to do. God made us so we cannot see into that realm on purpose, so we don't get involved in demonic activities. Drugs tear down that barrier.

rehcueguy,
You have asked a very good question - God did create the seed and the plant - when used properly it may help - when used improperly it may hurt.
Here are 2 things to think about:
1. God made our bodies - they actually belong to Him - should we misuse our gift?
2. God also tells man to obey the laws of the land - so not doing so is going to be a sin in His eyes.
Sorry - I don't have scripture handy - but I hope the questions help!

It would fall under sorcery (that is in essence drug use) anything put in the body to alter the state of the mind for recreational purposes is wrong. (notice recreational added there, which means anti depressants and such as that that do alter the mind is not a sin because it is treating an illness) Mary-Jane used for medical purposes is not a sin.

I believe it is wrong to smoke pot.
1st off, our bodies are considered temples, and we are supposed to take care of it, not damage it.
2ndly Everything God made was good, as seen in the 1st chapter of Genesis, He made every thing "and God said that it was good." When sin entered the world, things changed, some things becoming bad.
I believe what man does with what God has given us makes it bad or good. Smoking pot, in my opinion, is wrong. It opens the mind to places God forbid us to go. And like point #1, damaging our bodies by smoking pot is not helping to teach others about Jesus or showing God our love. Hope this helps out.
Peace in Christ! :)
