The plants have to attempt to get more sunlight in the limited shade. Thus, they expand their surface area to catch more sunlight to get as much sunlight as another plant that is directly in the sunshine.

In full sun, chloroplasts align themselves to the direction of the light which means more can be packed into a smaller space. In the shade they align perpendicular because of limited light and thus a larger leaf. Chloroplasts are roughly cylindrical in shape.

its is because that the leafs grow bigger and boader so that they increase their surface area allowing for more light to be captured to allow the plant to grow.
