My ex husband got married about 2 weeks ago to a lady he met in the Phillipines. It was more like an internet meeting than a mail order bride thing, but they do work. They had 'virtual dates' for over a year, when he finally flew out there (he's in the US) and met her and her family. He went back a few months later and brought her to the US and they got married. They're going back to the Phillipines and will have a big ceremony for her family.
It wasn't a quick project though, he met a lot of ladies online before he met her.
The way to figure out who's on the up and up is if they ask you for money to come to see you, they are just going to keep asking you. This one asked him to come see her.

So-called "mail order brides" is a bad, misunderstood term. You can easily meet a man or woman from another country on thousands of sites from myspace.com to match.com. International dating is different from local dating because you have to jump on a plane to go see them in person. If you can afford it, fine. You can minimize your risks by getting to know each other on the net using messaging, email, chat and video conferencing. "Mail order brides" is a term originating back when you actually did order a wife from a catalog, like in the Old West.
