I have trouble swallowing and I get esophageal spasms. I eat the right foods, have GERD, and take aciphex twice a day. My GERD was not caused by anxiety, yet my doctor gave me anxiety pills (buspirone?) to relax the esophageal muscles. They are not working. Did she give me the wrong medicaiton for what I have? Also, are there medicines out there that target this problem? If so, what are they? Are they effective? Is there hope for me? I just get no help from doctors! thanks, friendlygal

I hope with all my heart that my story will help you. Approx. five years ago I started having this extreme pain in the middle of my chest than one day without any warning I've had this esophageal spasm. I was certain I was going to sufficate. This happened 8-9 times, since I've had no other symptoms my doctor said it cannot be GERD, it's psychosomatic da,da,da. I went to see another doctor , he told me at my first visit that I suffer from an illness called GERD. Prescribed Losec 20mg taken daily in the morning.I've had no recurrance ever since. My best wishes.
P.S I've been taking Ativan Img at night in the past two years to help me to sleep, but I think it has nothing to do with the disappearance of the symptoms of esophageal spasms.

It's time to see another doctor, apparently your doctor has to many things on her chart to help you. Tell her this, and see another doctor. You will help two people here, maybe others, wake her up.
