All pupils have the potential to defeat their masters eventually. Back in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, there was this guy named Sigmund Ringeck who studied under a certain Johannes Lichtenhauer. Ringeck learned everything Lichtenhauer had to teach and went off to become a master-at-arms himself, where he took Lichtenhauer's verses, made them accessible and more comprehensible to more people and then added in a few of his own maneouvers in there.

That is the essence of learning a martial art. Take in everything your instructor/master/sensei/whatever has to teach you. Learn it, master it. Only then will you be able to expand on it with the sum of one's personnal experiences and own style. Eventually, the pupil will surpass the master.

when you get taught something, you treat the teacher with respect. you wouldnt show your instructor up, as that is generally ego acting out. if you did become an equal it is time to move on to something new. no one person knows everything, so move around every few years, or at least every 5. a new perspective does wonders.
stagnation is the cancer of any knowledge.

p.s, dont be an @ss and try to usurp your instructors seniority. it is showing no respect, when you should realise how much you have learnt to go from zero to hero. ,move on...

My Sifu always acknoledges that we will one day surpass him. I have been studying with him for over fifteen years and can count the times that I've bested him on one hand. These have been the moments when he's seemed most pleased with me and I usualy get some extra tips or pointers when it happens. You should look for a humble instructor who understands that there are many veriables in a fight. This means that ANYTHING can happen. a great master cold be defeated by an 11 year old with no training. If you accept this than your ego will not prevent you from disclosing ALL of your knowledge to your students.

Well.. I believe that the instructors would teach us everything but due to our lack of experience we couldn't show up to them.

A good instructor will teach you everything for which he/she thinks you are ready. A good student will not attempt to show up his/her instructor.

wouldn't it be kinda hard for him to teach you more than he knows? I don't really think that could work.
