As a clear lens, they're alright. As for sunwear, only you can be the judge. They change from clear to 87% sun tint in about 38 seconds. It takes a little longer to change back to clear. They WON'T change in a car. Transitions need ultraviolet light to change and your car's windows are UV protected. They will get darker in colder temperatures than warmer.

Transitions has a life expectancy of two years...they will stay darker with less changeability after the two year mark.

As for price, they can be rather expensive. Each optical sets their own price in accordance to overhead, experience, etc.

Hope that answered your questions.

The cost varies depending on where you get them from but they work real well. I used to have them and my husband still has them. We liked them a lot. The only reason I didn't get them last time is because I was toooooooooooooooooooo cheap to pay the extra cost for them. I use a pair of clip on sunglasses right now. For me with all 4 of us wearing glasses now and I am the one paying for all of them I am a little budget conscious so I opted not to get them last time in my glasses.

I have worn them for at least twenty years. I love them. It saves switching glasses or putting on those clip on sunglasses. They are quite expensive. I am not sure just how much that component costs because I also have progressive lenses and non glare finish added and my glasses cost about $450.00. Yours may not be so expensive.
