I love the name Mavis. It's so old fashioned that it just might be cool by the time she's old enough to really care. Besides, I have a name that is so common that at my graduating class at school there were 5 girls with the same first AND middle name in a class of 250... How boring. There were even more with just the first name. I hated it and wanted to change it to something no one else had. At least if the little girl hates it she can always change it when she's older. Besides, Mavis is also the name of a song thrush. She couldname her baby worse things, like Macarena. Gah, that was a horrible song.

By best friend was called Mavis she was an English-woman who imigrated to SA and that was where i met her. She was the most interesting, compassionate, sweet person i have ever met. You could talk to her about anything, home problems, anything and she kept it all to herself and helped out where she can. I miss her so much, she was about 65 and i was in my twenty's. Nothing wrong with the name Mavis, better than calling your child Damien, or Apple. So i associate that name with kind, loving and interesting people. It is not the name that make the person remember.:)

Well, at least it isn't a common name. And I don't see what is so bad about it. Lots of old-fashioned names have come back - look at all the Emilys and Emmas. I think it is worse to name a baby something that one in every ten children is being called these days.
Incidentally, not to be mean, but I know an awful lot of Nicolas and Nicoles. It is a pretty name, but I wouldn't use it for that reason.

a bloody old one! and has she not thought about the bullying it could cause, im sure a name like that could attract some nasty comments from the nasty people you get around these days. try and come with something else for her, or give her inspiration to change it, also there is a website where you can actually see what rating your name is based on the number of people called it in that year, like grace my eldest is in the top ten (or was last year), and anya my 1 year old was harldy used at all! if anyone an help me to remember the name of that site for you then that could be a help, ill go have a look too see if i can find it

ok ive found it, its www.bounty.com, and i did the name search for you and it doesnt even come up in their database so if they want a name no one else has got then go for it, but im guessing its not their for a very good reason! its horrid, and i checked my daughters name again to check it was working ok, she is still 9th, so it is lol! good luck

Don't do it! It is an old person's name. But maybe in 30 years' time, it will have gone full circle and Mavis will be cool again! Seriously, what is she thinking!

it'[s nice that the baby is being names after her gran, but names change with each generation, that might of been a fashionable name 50 years ago but if a child is called that in this day and age it will probable be teased it would probable be better if it was the middle name rather than the forename. xx

I think you should leave her be. It has special meaning for her, and she won't thank you for criticising her choice.

Everyone will accept it once they get used to it, and not even think about it. I wouldn't have thought the kid would get bullied for this more than any other name; at least nothing rhymes with it! (Unless her surname is Davis.)

There are far worse names out there. My personal favourite - Diana Ross called her daughter Chudney.

Actually, I rather like Mavis. Wish I'd thought of it for my little Britnee Chardonnay.

My little girl is called Faith Jane Winifred. We gave her the Winifred as both my and my husband's grandmothers had that name. I wanted it to be continued as our grandmothers meant a lot to us.

I would possibly consider tactfully asking he if she could use Mavis as a middle name as it is not really very pretty is it? i went to school with a girl called Gladys and she was always teased about it and hated telling strangers her name.
