My mom had the spelling of my first name legally changed when I was 4, and now haven't been able to get a birth certificate with the correct spelling. I've been trying since last July, and I want to get a passport to travel. What other documents can I use, or is it even possible? Thanks.

You'll need to go to the Court where your Mom filed the petition for Name Change and get a copy of the court order that legally changed your name. Since your birth name and your current name are different you will have to show that it was legally changed with a copy of the court order. If you are now married, you will need your marriage license showing the change from maiden name to married name. That, along with a certified copy of your birth certificate and a government issued photo ID ( Driver's license or photo ID card ) should be all that is required for a passport. You'll need to apply for it in person. See the website for locations where you can apply for one.

I don't know what state you are in, but if you take your old birth certificate, and the court transcripts to the passport office with you, you might have a chance. If not there then go to legal aid and petition the court for a new birth certificate. You might as well do it now. There are alot of government offices that require your original certificate. Good Luck

if you contact the office your birth was first registered in they will be able to provide a full copy of the original. only other way is if you have an expired passport they will renew it from that.
