I have a 4 year old Chocolate Lab. She has a bad anxiety problem. When she was a year old she was fine, we would hunt togeather, fish, play in the rain, everything. Then one day she just freaked over the sound of a gun shot. Then she was scared of the rain. Now every little thing makes her pupels dialate, her breathing heavy, and she shakes. She has never been left alone with anyone, she is always with me, and I hardly ever have to scold her. Friends that I have met have said that they have always had problems with Chocolates having seizures and such. Is this a common problem with Chocolates, and is there any way to help her with it? Please, only seriouse replies. She is like my child.

I don't know a lot about dogs, but did anything else happen at the moment when she heard the gunshot? Maybe something else scared her at the moment of the gunshot and now she associates hard noises with the thing that scared her in the first place. I work at a daycare center and you see things like that happen a lot with children. If they have a sore throat and swallowing hurts, then they get an negative association with eating which can last long after the sore throat has gone. Some kids don't eat well for as long as a year. So if your dog has had a similar experience with something that scared her at the moment of the gunshot then maybe she has made some kind of connection.

Don't you sometimes wonder about "friends" who tell you things like they've always had problems with blah, blah, blah?? What's up with these so-called friends anyway... sheesh. Anyway, we had a beautiful chocolate lab for 14 years. He was a great dog! Take good care of yours - never, ever give him people food. Just healthy dog food, ok? Labs get sick if fed people food... so stick to good dog food. Also, plenty of dogs are scared of loud noises (especially fireworks). There was a St. Bernard in our neighborhood who was so scared of thunderstorms he slept in the bed with his owners (and that's a HUGE dog). Anyway... have your dog checked out by the vet (dogs don't like vets either, lol). You picked a great dog. S/he will always be loyal and loving to you and that's what really counts!

not something you describe is out of the customary for a Labrador doggy. in fact, this is not out of the customary for any doggy. in case you have had a Labrador before, there is not any distinction in temperament between a yellow Lab or a chocolate Lab. There are variations from one dogs to the different, of course. in case you experience you're having themes (you probably did not incredibly point out any) take some doggy obedience instructions along with her.

that is quite odd, i have a chocalte lab and she is just fine. NO seziures or anything like that. Loud noises and things dont scare her, except for the vaccum she doesnt really like that. Well your situation is quite odd. I highly suggest talkin to your vet about it and tell him what happened. He will be able to help you out better and might be able to run some kind of test to see if something happened to her, brain wise. But im sorry for what has happened to your dog. Good luck!

Try taking her to a veteranarian. I had a yellow lab once and whenever he heard lound noises, he would hide and shake, but he was always afraid. As for the rain, did she ever get stuck outside? that might have done it, but i'm not sure.

Dogs usally are exposed to a dramatic event to make them afraid of loud noises. Maybe a near by lightining strike is the cause.

did you rescue her from anything? like a shelter? i heard that labs do have seizures frequently.. as they get older they panic more, and feel the whole world is coming down on them. dont worry. she will love u no matter what... i think the seizures are called Epilepsy.. the medication used for it is Phenobarbital. you should go to a vet to have her checked...

Wow, this sounds like an abnormal problem. I think you should see a vet, or a dog trainer

The shot may have scarred her half to death! Gunshots can damage human ears, imagine what a dog hears!
