Whether or not it disgusts you, it is not sanitary especially during flu season. As long as the person turns away and uses a napkin, sneezing can be contained fairly safely and politely. But I agree, if there is any way to excuse oneself beforehand, why not. People need to go the restroom anyway to wash their hands after that. So why not go there in before you blow your nose.
I think the worst thing is people assuming you agreed to share your food with them, not even asking but eating off your plate with their forks or their fingers, especially during flu season, leaving you no subtle way to refuse to eat the rest of your food for fear of getting sick. The most I have been able to do is to offer them the rest of whatever portion they touched, "here have some more." If I can stop them in time I tell them that I may have caught something and wouldn't want them getting my germs. Then I can cut off an untouched portion and place on a salad plate for them.
I think that scenario is worse than noseblowing, and is more embarrassing and unsanitary.

It's not as gross as say, blowing your nose into your hands and then licking your fingers clean, or sneezing all over everyone's plates. As long as it is done discreetly, it really doesn't bother me all that much. I excuse myself and go to the bathroom just because I know that it does offend some people, but people who handle all the pieces of bread before selecting one for themselves are far more offensive, in my opinion.

Blowing one's nose at a restuarant table is definitely disgusting- right up there with belching loudly at the table or wiping your mouth with your sleeve.

I agree with you, it isn't very nice to blow your nose at the table unless you really must. Worse to me is a big loud burp.

I hate it when people walk into a room after going to the toilet and they're wiping wet hands down the front of thier pants.
