Don't buy from pet stores unless they are a reputable place finding homes for rescue cats.
If you buy from a breeder they should have already gotten at least their first set of shots, and should give you a health record indicating when and which ones then got. You should contact a vet within a couple days of getting a new cat to set up it's next set of shots. Each vet has their own schedule of at what ages they like to do things. But it's pretty standard for a cat to have a couple sets of shots by it's first 4 months. I just learned this because we just got a couple of kittens and have literature from a couple of different vets.

Don't take a kitten from a breeder that is less than 8 weeks old, because they need to be with the mother for those weeks. If it's a rescue kitten that doesn't have a mother, you might have to get some KMR (kitten meal replacement, like baby formula) to feed it if it's too young to chew.

But no matter what I would research who you're getting the cat from, and no matter what, if you're getting a cat, make sure you're committed to taking good care of it ;) they can be a handful til you get used to them, lol.

Good luck :)

I would recomment an animal shelter, such as the SPCA, I got a cat a couple of weeks ago and it cost £36. She was microchipped, vaccinated and spayed.

There are so many cats there needing a home that I wouldn't go anywhere else to get a pet. You are doing something kind, and you also have the knowledge that the cat has been checked over by a vet.

There will have been cats abandoned because their owners moved away / died / got another pet. They are not all there because of behavioural problems!

My cat is 12 years old and is very healthy, friendly and a great pet, I would definitely recommend the SPCA, and as it is your first pet they will be happy to give you any advice you need.

Good luck!

Maybe go to a home for cats and dogs who have been mistreated. You could get a cat that has already been vaccinated etc and you would be giving a cat a new and better life. I got a cat from a place like that and they can be nervous at first around people but they are alright after a while!

You have a very good tool at your disposal to answer any question you have, or else you couldn't posted this.
What you should do is call your local vets office and ask for some advice on the caring and needs of your new pet, So many people get pets that don't have any idea how to care for them and the outcome is usually a very sick or dead pet.
Just remember that when getting a new kittie comes the responsibility of looking out for their health and well being.
Personally I would adopt a kitty from your local humane society, all health issues have already been taken care of
and you get to choose your kittie of choice, it may cost a few bucks be it will be cheaper then doing it on your own.
And you may be saving a kitties life due to overcrowding

it depends on if you get it thru a pound or free from the paper or from a breeder. either way you asked to see if it has had it shots or not. call a vet in your area and find out how much shots cost in your area. then you will have a better idea if you have enough money or not. if you buy it from someone who says it had had shots asked for the paperwork to prove it they should have that. and make sure the description of the cat matches the cat!! it happen to my friend she bought a cat from a private person and when she got home she checked the vets papers and the shots were for a black male and she had a white female.(the person was giving out phony vet papers)) anyway good luck and have fun with your new pet

Please dont buy a cat from a pet shop, there are so many cats in shelters that need a home so much more.
I paid £50.00 donation for my cat and the first lot of jabs cost approx £100 and then got him neutered for £85.
They dont cost that much if you think of all the fun you can have with a pet cat. My cat was quite ill for a while and cost me over £1000 in vets bills and medication but its worth it.

You already have plenty of answers concerning the technicalities. In addition and just as important, is somewhere warm for your cat to sleep, and lots of cuddles, play and love from you. Maybe consider getting two if you can afford 2 lots of vaccinations, neutering, etc. That way they will be company for one another when you go out. Good luck.

Get 1 from the pound. They need you the most. Then take it to the vet to get its shots, usually 3 sets if you get a kitten. 1 at 6, 9 and 12 weeks. Spayed/neutered at 6 months. Good luck, I have 3 cats.

i have a gorgeous cat from the Cat's Protection League - already vacinated and spayed - £50 donation made to the CPL but a lot less than it would have been to buy a cat from a pet shop and pay out for vaccines - i don't regret the decision at all. enjoy xx

Costly. Vaccinations £100, neutering/ spaying £60/ £80. Food toys cat litter bedding. All adds up, I got a kitten 2 months back, he's cost me a fortune, but I still love him.
