To those who have said that you can't predict it...
Gavin De Becker in his book, "The Gift of Fear" makes it clear that in 99 percent of cases you can predict it, and steps can be taken to avoid it. Especially if you allow the party a chance to save face.
Much would change in terms of world peace, if we could understand and utilize face-saving practices. Whether on the individual, local, state, national, or international levels.

The natural communication given through your creaturehood is the best deterrent.Violence is distorted aggression.Aggression is the ability to act creatively. When an individual is denied,or denies himself the power to act,or is put in a position of powerlessness. He will act ,without regard,as to whether his actions are creative or not. When an individual denies his impulse to communicate, his impulse becomes frustrated and accumulates until his communications finally explode into violence.

Unfortunately... avoiding violence will probably never happen... we can all take steps to reduce it... by thinking before we act... etc...
but... evil/violence is just as much a part of the world as is good/charity... you can't have a quarter without a heads and a tails...
Think before you act... that's the biggest part of it...

You can't. I think if your in a situation where you have a gut feeling something is not right, then MAYBE.
I just think some people are at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Others do go out and look for it.It's a great shame for poeple that don't and my heart goes out to them and family & friends that have to pick the pieces up.

we would need to stop thinking that we have to use brute force to obtain everything or to change others point of view.
it is not any ones right to take anothers basic human dignity away just because they are bigger, stronger or more powerful.
it is usually the bully who is so weak minded that violence is their only ability to communicate.

Impossible.
Because you do not always know where the violence is coming from or when it is going to happen.
