This is actually a very heavily debated question. Creationists believe he made the earth in 7 24hr days, while other groups believe that it is referring to periods of time. Some may say that the 7 days are not over, and that we are in the 7th day, or period of time, when God rested and viewed Creation.

God is all powerful. He can do anything. Genesis 1 describes how he made the earth in 7 days.

How did He make the heavens and the earth? Very Good.
And in only Six days.
The Seventh Day He rested ... not because He was tired; but, rather, as an example for humans.

Yeah, I agree . . . Why the heck did he take so long.
I think it was because he was trying to demonstrate something significant in the number 7. Establishing a pattern perhaps. After all, the construct of the book of Revelation entails sevens of various types and kinds.

It is a story in the Old Testament. Don't count on the time period being acurate or the event actually happening that way. Everybody asks this question at some time in their lives, but since there is no answer, they just let it go and forget it. nobody knows the real answer.

I believe there is a verse in Genesis that says, To God, "A day passes like a millenium, and a millenium like a day"
The point is, that there is much that is non-literal in the Bible. This is one of those times.

He's God, he can do anything. He technically created it in 6 days, because the 7th was Shabat and he didn't work.
And yes, 7 days literally means 7 days.

If you are the sort of person who asks questions like how and why, you should not take the Bible literally. This way lies madness.
