When they're 2 or 3 as long as you'll be supervising the whole time and as long as the pool looks clean and safe.

We take my daughter 1 time a week, she is 19 months old. My son has gone since about this age too. You have to be right there at all times, but it's a great experience for them! Get some arm floaties and some swim diapers and you are set!

It's actually safe to take babies swimming at 6 months, or so the YMCA says. I took my son when he was 6 months old and enjoyed it. The class is pretty much just to get the babies used to the water though - no real lesson going on. I then took my son again at 14 months old and he did awesome. At 18 months, he can float alone, just using wearing a floating vest. Sometimes he holds on to a noodle, but sometimes he doesn't want to.

I have always brought my children to the public pools from birth (when they are open). I feel its safe as long as you watch them.
