The subject of conscience is interesting because it is as influenced largely by culture and nurture rather than by say instinct. many Christians put forward the view that the Bible holds one homogeneous view on mores. Although the law of God given through Moses gives a standard the action and attitudes of people vary widely throughout the centuries.
In today's liberated society one notes that many problem pages are full of queries that belie the liberator's stance. People are conservative and most prefer a fairly strict regime. Especially for others, though they themselves may be allowed to stray now and again.
We have to address the question of a genetically need for conscience. As far as we are aware it is a strictly human trait. However, in all social orders, there are controls, so it is not likely to be genetically important but socially so, and hence indirectly of genetic importance. As one of the fundamentals of social order is to allow for the alpha males and females to propagate.
But the idea of only alpha males and females reproducing is not part of human culture and certainly not part of the modern era. However, there is still a need for control and no amount of vigilance or policing is going to be as effective as self policing. So you bring your child up in the way that it should go so that it won't depart from it and ensure that you know for yourself that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
Ones conscience is tied up with ones belief. Beware of 'it's all right if' as good usually doesn't have to be justified. I'm appalled by the conscience debilitating effects of drink and drugs. So drugs don't do any harm? And ones religious belief can over-ride conscience for it is God's will that I send these infidels to hell. Really? And consider when the principled Caiaphas and the scrupulous Pontious Pilate dealt with Jesus of Nazareth - they crucified the Lord of Life
No doubt others will point out that the true value of conscience is that it is the voice God uses to speak to us. There are times when we would rather our conscience was mute, but having a bad conscience or worse an ignored conscience is not good. It is better to seek forgiveness, learn from the experience and move on.

it is important because you are not living alone.
and as you don't want others to treat you badly (for selfish will...)than your conscience prevent you from doing that things which you don't want others will do to you.
