The analogy I like to use is that of a billion dollars in a bank account. Let's say that this account receives 3% interest. Some want to use all $1 billion to stop world hunger right now. Next year, world hunger will be solved, but now we have to deal with global poverty, but you have no money left. However, if you use the interest, you have $30 million to use every year for a really long time. Now we can tackle many more problems at once for as long as it takes to solve the problem. Similarly, if the Church were to sell everything and put it all towards an issue, in the short run it's great. But in the long run, not so good.

The Catholic church, as a single entity probably does more work for and with the poor, sick, homeless and orphaned than any other organization on this planet. I've seen pastors take in homeless and vagrants so that they would have a warm place to sleep. In my town, we have a Catholic nursing home. In the neighboring town there is a Catholic orphanage and a counseling center. Less than an hour away is a Catholic hospital that is the leading heart center in the state.
Missionaries throughout the world are doing the work that most so-called Christians only talk about. Catholics were the ones helping the lepers, AIDS babies in Africa. Who among the hay-sayers has come close to what Mother Theresa has done?
Call the Catholic Church the great whore, but until you've come close to their work, you're not even close. You're just a whining poor cousin who can't compete.
That all said, I'm NOT a catholic; I'm not even a Christian, but I have seen first-hand the work that the Catholic Church has done, and your Bible says clearly, "By their fruits shall ye know them."
The fact that some PEOPLE, i.e. priests, in the church have done wrong can no more impugn the Catholic church than can the recent controversy with Ted Haggard, or other protestant ministers who have acted grossly immorally. Stick a sock in it until you show me a church that has never had an active sinner. If you find a perfect church, go join it and it will become imperfect.
The Vatican vaults do have teasures. They are also one of the world's best conservatories, preserving these treasures. Few are the places that can properly preserve such ancient documents and works of art. Yes, they have acted wrongly at times, removing the Roman Gods from the pantheon, but they owned the pantheon and made it into a Caholic Church. At the time, the works of art that were destroyed weren't as valued as they are today. No excuse, but still a reason.
And the Evangellicals are just about laughable, with minsisters with their own private jets and $500 pairs of shoes and Crystal Cathedrals and pressing the full 10% out of everyone of their members, with building funds and missionary funds as extras. TV evangellists preying on the sick and old that if they send money, God will cure them. It's a hell of alot less shame than I see in the Catholic services on TV.
These fools complaining about the Catholic Vestments don't argue much with the ministers that wear the $2000 Armani suits and Itialian leather shoes. Ritual is a part of what brings humans closer to Deity. Vestments, such as the priest are a visual cue that something special is taking place. Many of these are made by church members who are good at sewing. The colors remind Catholics about the seasons of the year, and what is important about it. The Catholic Church is full of symbolism that most evangellicals have lost. That is to be pitied.
Again, I'm a Pagan, but I'm sick to death of all of the self-righteous evangellicals pointing their finger at the Catholics. Put your own money where your own mouth is. Get out there and serve in the trenches. When you've helped as many people as the Catholics have, then you'll have a right to complain.

At first I am sorry to say that the word third world is not a politically correct word. There is only one world, the only difference is now the west is dominated. It was dominated by east several years ago and who know what happens tomorrow. Catholic church is already doing a lot of things to eradicate the poverty compare to the so called devoloped country like US. Funding is not a good option to erdicate poverty. Social devolopment and political awareness are the core element .
Churh is of course an institutional organisation and it need asset to flourish. Simply forget what church is doing in the devoloped countries. Just try to know what they are doing in devoloping and poor nations. Even though vast majority of Indians are Hindu's and Muslims cathloic church is doing fantastic works for marginalized people in the rural villages. So please do not underestimate the importnatns of catholic church.

initially, not each and every servant of the Church takes a vow of poverty. that's barely specific non secular orders. 2nd of all, many of the Church's treasures have been presents to the church, and the Church approves of sacred paintings that conjures up human beings to worship the Lord, so it make sense that the Church keeps dissimilar those gadgets. A portray does not feed anybody, and in case you sell it, it may desire to finally end up in the palms of somebody who intends to commit sacrilege with it. 0.33 of all, each and every parish is meant to be supported by making use of the human beings who stay in that parish. If a parish is going bankrupt, its with the aid of fact the human beings who stay there are not doing their section. In poverty bothered factors, interior sight parishes that have excesses share with those that are actually not financially sound, and then the Diocese kicks in a share, too, if choose be.

the catholic church helps to support many projects in 3rd world countries, first of all , they send missionaries to help educate children and adults. Training in various trades such as carpentry, farming, and nursing have been brought by missionaries, both religious and lay ministries have contributed to this. Some of the Catholic lay missionaries have helped to design bridges, dams, roads hospitals and schools in these underdeveloped countries. Many governments from these countries cannot take care of the needs that these new programs demand, so the Church remains in control of them.
The Catholic Church has contributed immensely to the development of these countries through contributions of money, volunteers and the spread of the gospel to these underprivileged yet you dont hear much about it.

The Catholic Church is NOT so rich. Catholics donate tons of money to the poor. Believe it or not, they actually need money to run their churches. And those "outfits" are Old-Testament based.
God Bless you.
