aka cavity or decay. If you don't know that then you won't know the answer. The cavity did not break the law, and I have never heard of Dental Police.

Dental caries = cavities. The progression goes something like this:
1. Germs live in your mouth. They've been there since you got your first tooth.
2. You eat stuff. Sugar and carb-rich food can be digested by the bacteria, and the end product is lactic acid. The sugars are also used to form the "plaque" which is sort of an adhesive for the germs.
3. The lactic acid erodes the calcium-rich enamel, eventually getting through the enamel.
4. The germs get though like a breach in a dam, and you wind up getting inflammation of the nerve, and eventually a full-blown infection (pulpitis, abscess).

"Arrested caries" occurs when the germs have slightly eroded the enamel, but repeated dosing of fluoride (in water, toothpaste, etc.) have allowed it to re-mineralize.

Arrested caries usually do not warrant treatment, but should be monitored by a dentist at regular check-ups.
