Ask him to talk to you about it. You hate to see him so upset. That you're there to listen if he wants to talk about his father. That even though it's a big loss to him to just look ahead to the future knowing that his dad is there for him in spirit. (I know it sounds corny, but sometimes people just need to hear it. This could strengthen your relationship as well)
