It doesn't matter what the conditions are behind a commandment from God, it's the act itself that I find abhorrent – I don’t care why God tells a person to dash a baby against a rock the act is barbaric – I don’t care if cannibalism is the result of a natural famine or God-made, eating children is barbaric – and, I don’t care how you try and justify the actions of a fictional God, the acts described in the Bible are inhumane and barbaric. You can attack me all you want and express outrage that I didn’t do a spell check, or you take a step back and honestly/critically try and understand why you based your life on such a barbaric book.
And I don't care if it's all just symbolism - if it is, the book was written by sick people - there's just no way to get around it.

I'm not brainwashed. I am of my own will. You're brainwashed by the media into thinking a fish is your cousin and a monkey is your grandpa. And may I ask, why are you waisting all your points trying to take down Christianity? Jesus said, "The gates of Hell WILL NOT prevail against my Church." I'm sorry, but you lose.

you know, i am glad that you bring this up because people tend to be confused about symbolism and actual commandment in the Bible. i don't know why. i believe you got the baby dashed against the stone thing from the Psalms, and the cannibalism from either Leviticus or the Gospels, but let me clear things up. Our God is not barbaric. In Leviticus, the Bible was telling the people what would happen to the Israelites if they didn't follow his commandments, and it wouldn't be because he would purposefully have them do it. Naturally, they would fall into hard times and naturally, famine and all those other things would come as an unfortunate result. About the baby- all people have times when they think really evil things, and the truly honest person admits it. The Psalms is a book that teaches the reader how to pray and to communicate with God. In doing this, you have to be honest with God, not hiding anything because when you refuse to be real, God can't help you because you're not trusting him. This explains the emotional element in David's writings of the Psalms, which are either songs or prayers. As king of a powerful nation, David had many obstacles to overcome, and no doubt faced trials daily. One of these was dealing with persecution from enemies. It is in our human nature to want to do evil to someone who harms us, and we even think the extreme. Is the writer of one of the books of the Bible exempt from this ugly side of humanity? Of course not! David was not perfect, but we thank him for even his excerpt on dashing a baby's head against the stone. God does not approve of the act, and commands that we are not to murder people. But you cannot convince me that you have never wanted to do wrong to someone before. David was telling God how he felt, and he wrote this. Not to say that he would actually go and do this, but if God commanded it, he most certainly would. And there was a time when God did command the children of Israel to go and destroy entire peoples, but why? It was because those people were evil. read about some of the things they were doing! You'll see, that God knew best on why these things should have been done. But God doesn't tell us to do these things. so don't think that God is barbaric until you be honest with yourself first, that if God is barbaric, then what exactly does that make you? Certainly not angelic. If so, please show me the halo.

No, and I can only speak for one Christian, myself. I am not hung up on symbolism. I believe that God is Love, and in being kind to my fellow man (or woman). I would never cause harm to an innocent child or be cruel to an innocent animal either. I believe that God wants us to be peaceful, and not to pick apart the Bible in order to justify our hateful actions. I do not find the Bible to be so full of barbaric recommendations, personally, but perhaps that is not what I am looking for in the book. Keep this in mind, people wrote the Bible, people are not perfect. The Bible is a guideline, and a storybook. Everyone needs to lighten up, and clean up thier own act, instead of trying to fix other people.

Calm down, yes a lot of it is barbaric, but look at the TIMES. We don't live in those time now and aren't expected to. God knows that times have changed since the Bible was written, He knows that everything has changed, every ones, well almost every ones, way of life has changed and He doesn't expect us to keep living according to how they lived back then. We've advanced, a lot, we aren't barbaric, we don't do things like that. Honestly,do you honestly not get it was written hundredsof years ago, and what life was like THEN, and how it's CHANGED NOW. Society is COMPLELY DIFFERENT.

So, let me get this straight...
If I don't agree with you, I must be "brainwashed"....
Interesting pov...

EDIT:
Oh, Brooke!!
God never told anyone to dash babies against rocks...you covered that already.
God never told anyone to eat children...
Some of the acts described in the Bible are inhumane and barbaric. There is alot of history in there, and, let's face it, people do inhumane and barbaric things. When some ancient cult that has nothing to do with Christianity sacrifices children to some idol by burning them alive, do you find that inhumane and barbaric?
Yes?
So does God...that's why He destroyed them.
I've been through all of your questions so far, and I haven't noticed anyone attacking you. But I have noticed that you seem full of rage and bitterness.
I am sorry for whatever it is that has angered you so.
I hope you will be able to make peace, eventually, with whatever it was....

It sounds as though you are brainwashed and are trying to sway good God loving Christians into a hatred that I just can not understand, I am glad that you seem to be reading the Bible and you do have some good points and I feel like if you took Bible study and asked questions to a Pastor you'd understand the versus you quote...

If you are ignorant to the context of the words written in the bible, why as one who doesn't believe in God would this offend you?
I know the answer is because your spirit is unsettled and every one of Gods creation longs to find him (like an adopted child searching for their birth parents).

These are also barbaric times. Mothers are allowing their own unchildren to be torn to pieces to be sacrificed to their own pro-choice god. sick, sick, sick.
The god of alcohol has a terrible hold on millions of people in the USA.
The god of illegal drugs turns their servants into prostitutes and murderers to satisfy their god.

Look around you. Times are more barbaric today than in biblical times. We just have different names for our gods.

Sounds like you're exhibiting a bit of intolerance -- toward Christians, I mean.

I notice that you didn't say SOME Christians are "brainwashed." You said that THEY ARE -- which means that you think we ALL are.

When a person paints all members of a group with the same brush -- as you are doing with Christians -- that's a classic example of biased uninformed reasoning.

So keep that pot-and-kettle rule in mind next time you're tempted to employ such double-standard rhetoric.
