Opposite sex is better. We have three cats and they all get on fine after a couple of weeks of bickering and sorting out pecking order once they were each introduced.

Do it slowly, try and leave an area of your house just for your adult cat at first so they have somewhere to get away from the kitten if they want, as kitten will see other cat as giant toy/climbing frame and old cat will get peeved. Also, feed them seperately at first, ours wer in different rooms til they got on, as they won't eat together if they aren't comfortable with each other. Remember to fuss your present cat just as much. You'll find females aren't as dependent or lap orientated as the males, especially neutered males, mine have always loved company while the females are pretty independant.

They will hiss and growl, but it's normal, just take your time, bit by bit and let them find their own way, but it will be fine, although I know that won't stop any worrying.

Good luck!!

Kittens are going to be a little hard to find for the next four or five months. You might find a female kitten around five or six months old who didn't get into the adoption "system" until now.

The male will take to the kitten faster and probably better than an older female cat would.

You should do without the cat flap when you bring the new gal in. Winter is the very worst time to go looking for a "lost" kitten, the days are short, the weather is cold and you would be searching in the dark if the kitten gets outside. Wait to open the flap and the outside world to her until spring.

Two of my adopted cats were lost in the wintertime and ended up in the shelter where I adopted them.

I had this dilemma a few years ago and asked my vet for advice - she told me that a male cat will always be more tolerant of a female kitten and that the best way to introduce them was with food! This worked a treat for me and my two cats are now best of friend. My older tom cat was about 9 years old at the time.

Keep them in separate rooms for a few days then swap rooms so they get used to each others scent.Don't leave them alone together until you are sure they have accepted each other, this might take a while.I have had cats for many years and they have all accepted each other in time. like people some get on better than others. You are wise taking a female as toms spray more when there is another tom 'be prepared for some spraying and aggression but be patient and they will settle down. Have fun and enjoy them.

A female is the best idea as another male would cause territorial prblems. She needs to be kept away from the catflap for a while. Get her spayed asap. Otherwise they should be fine togther after a few days. A bit of hissing and spitting is to be expected at first but should settle down fairly quickly.

should be no problem introducing your adult cat to a kitten. obviously you cant let the kitten out, so replacing the cat flap you have with one that operates from a small chip in the collar is a good idea. that way the adult cat can come and go and the kit stays in til older. be vigilant tho, as kits can be quick and may try to rush thru to follow the older cat

I recently done the same for my male cat.

If your going to get a female kitten, beware; The male may start to be rough with her, and at times of that, seperate them.

Its a risky buisniss, but after a few days, they'll start to get along and like each other.
As i said, be careful that the male doesn't get too rough, and best not to leave them un-suporvised for the first few days.

Other than that, good luck with them ;)

Hi, we have several cats and my experience has been that with our oldest male cat is very territorial. We have 1 female and he will have nothing to do with her and she tries so hard to be friends with him. Male cats will do the "protest" thing by peeing on the carpet and whatever other little oddities they normally do that you hate. I would stick to a another male.
