think of it this way. has someone ever asked you a question that you thought might take guts to ask. well they did it. and think did you laugh at them or make fun of them after they had done what they had did. I think not. so what is there to think about just do it already. and if he says no just think" hey this guy doesnt know what he is missing." you are better then him.

Ask him out yourself that way you will get an answer. On the not getting nervous part, well i say bite the bullet. I know it sounds stupid but practice infront of a mirror and then say at lunch or sometime when you two normally talk (not in class) bring it up and ask. Theres nothing you can really do but ask. here's a way to get him to ask you out. From a distance, wave to him and scream "WHAT'S UP SEXY!!!!" That should get his attention.
